The Cocos Island is a beautiful volcanic island located in the Eastern Pacific approximately 300 miles south west of Cabo Blanco (Costa Rica) and 340 miles west of Malpelo Island. The island is accessed by live aboard and has some spectacular diving, however surface activities are limited.

The Cocos Island generally experiences a high rainfall (typically 25ft per year), hence the rainy season (June to December) tends to be very wet, however this doesn't usually affect the diving although the swells can be greater at this time of year. Temperatures tend to hover around the 25C mark for most of the year.

December to May

At this time of year generally the seas are calmest and the water visibility is best. However Hammerheads are most common from June to December during the rainy season, so this may attract you here even though the weather will not be great.

This island is dived from a liveaboard usually for 10 days or longer and is often combined with the Malpelo Islands as a single expedition. These islands are known for plenty of Mant Rays, Eagle Rays and Sharks not to mention the large schools of fish.

Strong thermoclines in the area can make the water temperature changeable depending on your location, so we would suggest at least a 5mm full length wetsuit and a set of gloves and a wetsuit hood is advisable.

25°C to 29°C (78°F to 86°F)

The live aboard usually takes at least 36 hours to reach the Cocos Islands. This is obviously on top of your flight to Costa Rica.

Being a live aboard your surface activities are limited to what fun can be creates whilst on board a boat.

The Cocos islands are remote and take a considerable time to access, having said this the diving here is exquisite.
