Kenya is often considered to be the Jewel of East Africa due to its stunning wildlife, game reserves, white sand beaches and pristine coral reefs. With one tenth of the area of Kenya  donated to National Parks, there are plenty of great safaris to choose from including; Amboseli, Masai Mara, Samburu and Tsavo.

Kenya also has three marine parks with excellent clear waters which attracts scuba divers from all over the world, most notably  Kisite Mpunguti Marine Reserve has some great diving with sites running from Tiwi to Shimoni.

Kenya has a hot tropical climate with average annual temperatures for the coastal town of Mombasa being from 22°C to 30°C with the capital city Nairobi varies from 14°C to 25°C. Being so close to the equator the sun shines all the year round and summer clothes are worn throughout the year, with the mornings and evenings tending to be cooler. The rainy periods run from April to June and October to December. During the season the rains can come down heavily in the afternoons and evenings. Generally the hottest period is February to March and the cooler weather is from July to August.

January to March

Diving is generally good throughout the year, with the best visibility during the dry seasons from June to October and January to March. Generally visibility is worst from July to August due to silting. During February to March there is a good chance of sighting Whales Sharks off the coast.

For safaris the main tourist season runs from January to February when the weather is hottest and the wildlife tends to congregate around the watering holes. The low season runs from March to May during the long rains.

Unfortunately the reefs in Kenya have suffered some damage, and are not comparable to the Red Sea or the Maldives however there are some good opportunities to scuba dive with some large pelagics (such as Whale Sharks).

Malindi, Watamu or the coast south of Mombasa is a diving hotspot with Diani Beach being particularly popular with scuba divers. For underwater photographers there are plenty of shallow reefs around here making for some great underwater photos, with visibility in the area tending to be good.

From February to March divers are likely to see Whale Sharks when diving on the outer reefs, in particular Nyuli Reef which has some strong currents attracting the Whale Sharks to the area. Kisite Point offers a much easier diving experience with the chance to see Bottlenose Dolphins and Hawksbill Turtles.

Please visit the national safari parks as they are a truly unforgettable experience!

The reefs around Kenya have suffered damage and cannot be described as the world's best. However when combined with the beautiful beaches and safaris available here, you may consider a visit to Kenya as part of a more rounded holiday.
