The tiny island of Montserrat is a tiny Caribbean island which has been left largely untouched by mass tourism in part due to a volcanic eruption on the island when the when Soufriere Hills volcano erupted and rendered half the island un-inhabitable (including the islands capital city Plymouth)  in 1995 and again in 1997. This lead to the collapse of the islands economy and a large portion of the islands population chose to leave. The volcano is still active, making this one of the more interesting islands to visit.
On the positive side, the island has some great black sand beaches, pristine corals and marine life and for anyone who enjoys visiting volcanoes, this island is a must.

The island has a warm tropical climate with temperatures in the winter averaging 21°C and 24°C in the winter and rising to 28°C and 31°C in the summer. The dry season runs from December to June and the rainy season is from July to November (rain tends to be in short bursts on the island with the sun quick to re-emerge). The island is also along the main hurricane belt and hence is occasionally affected between July and November.

February to May

The best time to visit Montserrat is the relatively dry season between February and May.

The lack of mass tourism has helped to preserve the marine life around the island, making this one of the more unspoilt locations in the Caribbean.

25°C to 30°C (76°F to 85°F)

Regular Winair plane services run from Antigua to Montserrat's new airport daily.

  •  Visit the old Capital Plymouth which is considered to be a modern day Pompeii
  • Visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory
  • Take a helicopter trip over the island.

Many of the previously famous sights on Montserrat have been either destroyed by Soufriere Hills volcano or are currently off-limits. However, there are still opportunities for quiet beach holidays, water sports, ecotourism and volcano viewing. Check with the Montserrat Tourist Board for information. Getting to the island can be a little more challenging as there are no direct flights.
