Jamaica is one of the larger islands in the Caribbean, with plenty of beaches and sunshine much like most of its neighbours. The culture of this island is somewhat different compared to the rest of the Caribbean and is more akin to Africa. High crime levels are still an issue on the island and in particular violent crime. Visitors to the island will find a wealth of beautiful beaches and cultural and historical sites to keep them interested.

A good destination all year round due to its relatively stable temperatures and humidity with temperatures being between 22°C (72°F) and 31°C (88°F) with the cooler temperatures present in the mornings and evenings during winter. Generally May to June and October to November are the rainiest times of the year with tropical storms and hurricanes occasionally occurring between June and November.

December to April
Peak season on the island is from December to April when Hotels and the tourist trade is at its highest alongside prices. It is worth noting that during the low season there are some good deals to be had on accommodation and flights if you are willing to take a calculated risk with the weather.

Diving on Jamaica is not the best that we have come across in the Caribbean due to over fishing and other human activities and the reefs can be a little bare. Having said this, if you are on the island for a more all-round vacation you may want consider doing a few choice dives.
Some sites you may want to keep in mind include:

  • Port Royal - a sunken city circa 1692 (permit needed).
  • Negril – some nice caverns in this area
  • Montego Bay Marine Park
  • Widow maker's cave
26°C to 29°C (78°F to 83°F)

Most major airlines offer direct flights to the island, however price can vary a lot depending on the time of year that you travel.

Jamaica has a lot to do when you are not in the water. The beaches are excellent, the food is also worthy of note. Things that you may consider doing include:

  • Visiting the islands beautiful waterfalls and lush mountains
  • Dunns River Falls
  • Blue Mountains Coffee Factory (supposedly the best in the world)

Crime on the island is still an issue and the diving isn't great due to over fishing and can appear baron in places.
