Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is one of two countries (the other being Haiti). Famous for its large all inclusive hotels dominating the prime beach front areas, most tourists are attracted to the island by its competative priced hotel packages and the magnificent golden sand beaches. On the north side of the island is the Atlantic ocean with the majority of resorts and hotels particuarly between Puerto Plata and Cabarete, however there also plenty of resorts along the Caribbean (south) side of the island.

The Dominican Republic  enjoys a typically tropical Caribbean climate with cooling sea breezes. During the winter the temperature on the island is approximately 24°C (75°F) rising to 28°C (82°F) on average in the summer, however on particuarly hot days the temperature can rise to the low 30's. The rainy season is between May and November, but consists of heavy showers of short duration after which the sun shines brightly once again.

December to May

Most times of the year are good to visit the island. The peak tourist season tends to be from December to May when most North Americans and Europeans tend to enjoy a holiday in warmer climates. Please be aware the hurricane season runs from June to Novemeber, during this period the island is occassionally hit by hurricanes.

The island has somewhat been over fished and the sea life to be seen here is less than some other islands. There are some wreck to be explored including the Hickory and Limon Wrecks.

26°C to 28°C (78°F to 81°F)

Most European and North American hubs offer direct flights to this island.

On the north side of the island are some good surfing and wind surfing spots.

If you are looking for a great dive island, this may not be the one for you, however if you want a cheaper caribbean holiday with more to do for non diving family members, this island may fit the bill!
