The British Virgin Islands (BVI) consists of over fifty islands and cays just off Puerto Rico in the Caribbean, making up half of the Virgin Islands, with the remaining part called the US Virgin Islands. The main islands are; Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.  BVI is a British overseas territory and is one of the wealthier countries in the Caribbean with high employment, of the 22,000 people 18,000 live on Tortola, which is approximately 20km by 5km and hosts the Capital of the BVI, Road Town.

The British Virgin Islands are almost always sunny with little temperature variation all year round, although humidity can be high, the hot island temperatures are fortunately tempered by the cooler trade winds blowing across the island. During the summer months, temperatures can range between 79-88°F (26-31°C), with little variation in winter when the averages are around 72-82°F (22-28°C). The island's rainfall pattern is unpredictable, and occasionally there are periods of drought.

December to April

High season (or winter season) in the Virgin Islands, when hotel rates are at their peak, runs roughly from mid-December to mid-April. However, package and resort rates are sometimes lower in January, as a tourist slump usually occurs right after the Christmas holidays. February is the busiest month. If you're planning on visiting during the winter months, make reservations as far in advance as possible.

The islands extensive coral reefs and famous shipwrecks are usually more than enough to entice anyone into the waters for a dive.

Unfortunately there are no direct flights to the BVI from the USA, Canada, Europe, or South America to the main airport, the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (EIS). All flights have to connect through another Caribbean airport on islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Antigua, St. Kitts, or St. Maarten/St. Martin.

Year-round winds provide great conditions for sailing, and the British Virgin Islands happily celebrate this asset by staging frequent regattas and fairs. For travellers who prefer to watch the sea rather than get into it, there is the breathtaking chance of spotting dolphins and whales criss-crossing the surface.

Unfortunately there are no direct flights to the BVI from the USA, Canada, Europe, or South America. The island can also be more expensive when compared to some of its neighbours.
