Kauai is the greenest and rainiest of all the Hawaiian islands and is often called the “Garden Island”. This is also the place where Captain Cook first arrived in Wairnea Bay during 1778. With approximately 56,000 residents, this is the least populated of all the islands with less tourism which is centred around a couple of locations.

Kauai has two seasons, summer which runs from May to September and winter from October to April.  Generally temperatures are consistent all year round with winter being a few degrees cooler and slightly more rain than summer.  On average temperatures are 27°C (80°F), peaking at 29°C (85°F) and dropping to 21°C (70°F) during the winter. Generally the driest months are June and July, although rain on the island is intermittent and you should get plenty of time in the sun no matter when you go.

June to October

Generally the water is warmest at this time of year, probably best at the end of summer.

Diving on Kauai is generally very good, with plenty of dive sites to choose from for both the beginner and advanced diver. Marine life you can see includes; the usual reef fish, dolphins and sea turtles.  Advanced divers may want to concentrate on the east and west shores (for cave and lava tube diving) with beginner dives centred around the north and south shores, inparticular Kee Beach, Hanalei Beach and Poipu Beach.

24°C to 27°C (74°F to 80°F)

To get to the island you will need to transfer on a short flight (less than an hour) from Honolulu (Hawaii).

Flights to Honolulu:

Flights from Europe tend not to be direct with an approx. flight time of 10hr flight time to the U.S. west coast or Canada and then a further 5hr connection to Honolulu. Direct flights from many U.S. hubs are possible, with 5hr – 10hr flights depending on the location. Direct flights from Australia (Sydney) and New Zealand (Auckland) are available.

If you are arriving from the U.S. mainland, it is not necessary to show a passport on entry (as this is 1 of the 50 U.S. states). Whether you are a U.S. citizen or foreign national, as U.S. entry formalities are done at the port of entry. Foreign visitors entering Hawaii directly from another country are subject to the same entry requirements as the United States mainland.

Two of the islands main attractions include; Waimea Canyon (a 3,000ft deep canyon) and Wai'ale'ale mountain standing 5,000ft tall and is also considered to be the wettest place on earth, due to its 1,231cm (485 inches) of rainfall each year.

Other than this you can Hike along the spectacular Na Pali Coast or take a Helicopter or Boat tour of the island.

Visitors from Europe will need to take three flights to reach their destination and the cost of air travel can make this destination less attractive.
